So many pictures, so little time! You really cannot appreciate this place unless you go yourself! So, be sure to check out their link and contact them. You need to reserve your spot if going on a holiday weekend. They do have about 3 cabins if you are a city dweller and can't get away from your TV. Most all of their spots are primitive camping - no RV spots are available. Our favorite is the bunkhouse - almost primitive but at least you do have electricity. www.dismalscanyon.com
The path into the canyon seemed like a long beautiful mile, until you reach this tree.....then you make the loop and go back up the other side for more beautiful views.
Stan never gives up his search for signs of Paleo-Man!! He found fragments from primitive knappings of arrowheads. And while down IN the canyon, the Great Spirit put a perfect point right on top of the ground just for him to find! He has it in his medicine bag now.
This Sway-Back bridge leads to a crevice that Jesse James hid out in long ago! And to the glow-in-the-dark dismalites. COOL PLACE!
They filled the pool while we were there - it took two days. This is it in the early stages. The other photos are fellow visitors who cooled off in this natural pool. The water was like 52 degrees! Takes your breath!
This is the waterfall from the overflow of the pool area - down in the canyon floor.
The pool is no deeper than 6 feet at its deepest point nearest the dammed end before it becomes a waterfall into the canyon floor. The creek goes all the way through the canyon and is oh so COLD! Crystal clear! |
This is Dissie the Cat. She lives off the visitors. She adopted us for our duration.
Stan managed to find time from exploring to knap out a point!
Inside view of the bunkhouse.

Gee, I sure hope that overhang don't decide to fall off!!
Just past this sign is the entrance to the canyon floor - lots of steps going down, down, down!! You can feel the temperture drop significantly about 10 steps down into the canyon!
